(1), not much time really passes between the games in the main series, with Mario being 24 years old as of the more recent titles, according to Miyamoto himself.

But the colors of his main outfit, while still red, blue, and with brown shoes across all images of his adulthood, are different hues between each console era. I chose to do it this way for flashbacks in Super Mario JBX to Mario's past adventures, to give a slight sign of the passage of time.

This was inspired by how Pokémon the Series handled flashbacks, where they redrew the scenes to fit the current season's art style, but still kept Ash Ketchum in the clothes he had at the time the flashback takes place.
