Gardjola Watchtower

The Gardjola Watchtower, located in Senglea, Malta, is a historic hexagonal sentry tower built in the 16th century as part of the city's fortifications. Its reliefs of a heron holding a stone, an eye, and an ear symbolize vigilance and attentive listening. The heron with the stone represents constant alertness; according to tradition, if the bird were to fall asleep and release the stone, it would drop and awaken it, reinforcing its role as a symbol of watchfulness. This watchtower serves as the central motif of the Xirka Ġieħ ir-Repubblika, a society of honour that acknowledges exceptional merit in the service of Malta or humanity. In the image, this watchtower appears outlined by me as part of my artistic process leading up to the final painting of the Xirka Ġieħ ir-Repubblika insignia.

La Garita de los Jardines Gardjola, ubicada en Senglea, Malta, es una histórica torre de vigilancia de base hexagonal construida en el siglo XVI como parte de las fortificaciones de la ciudad. Sus relieves de una garza sosteniendo una piedra, un ojo y una oreja simbolizan la vigilancia y la escucha atenta. La garza con la piedra representa la atención constante, ya que, según la tradición, si el ave se durmiera y soltara la piedra, esta caería y la despertaría, reforzando su papel como símbolo de vigilancia. Esta garita es el motivo central de la condecoración Xirka Ġieħ ir-Repubblika, una sociedad de honor que reconoce méritos excepcionales al servicio de Malta o de la humanidad.
